For over thirty years, the Austin Visual Arts Association (AVAA) has supported area artists behind the scenes and behind the canvas by organizing weekly classes to foster artistic talents, arranging discussion panels to encourage conversations about art, and assembling exhibits to give exposure to deserving artists. Tonight, AVAA will host the first ever Austin Visual Arts Awards to recognize the many talented creatives that call Austin home. The awards ceremony will take place at the Austin Museum of Art Downtown beginning at 7pm. Tickets to the awards may be purchased online or at the door for $25.00 - admission includes a cocktail reception and networking event.

Beard Folks Art Show at Austin Handmade on October 16th, 6:30-9:30pm

This Friday is Austin Handmade’s last shindig as they will be closing their doors come November 1st. The Beard Folks Art Show will feature an interactive photo-booth by Corinne Loperfido, bearded art by Allyson Lipkin, and many more. DIY demos by The WonderCraft & music by Team Fabrication DJs.

On Friday August 14, 2009, from 7:00-9:00pm, Austin Handmade is having a reception featuring Beverly Satch Mangham. Satch, has been creating her assemblage-collage style works since 1992. She develops these from a variety of materials: urban cast-offs, kitchen utensils, tin cans and children’s doll parts. Other more unusual items are incorporated, such as old boxes, jewelry, antiquated advertisements and memorabilia. By combining, juxtaposing and redefining ordinary objects she hopes to initiate a visual conversation with each viewer.

Drinks will be sponsored by Dripping Springs Vodka & entertainment by DJ Hot Britches.This event is free and open to the public. Original artwork will be available for purchase at the event.

On Thursday July 16, 2009, from 8:00-11:00pm, Austin Handmade will be celebrating the Grand Re-opening of its new store location at 2009 S. First St. Combining launch efforts with this year’s Austin Fashion Week. The Austin Handmade Grand Re-opening Party will showcase a fashion show by local designer Robie Dodson of Parsimony. This fashion lineup will feature some of the coolest, trendy, chic, and comfortable items in all of Austin. The Austin Handmade store’s Grand Re-opening Party will offer special in-store discounts, along with giveaways from participating sponsors such as the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls, select Austin based artists and a membership for a free year of classes provided by The WonderCraft. Party guests will be able try out the new Austin Handmade Do-It-Yourself Room using simple kits created by Austin artists with instructions and basic supplies available for purchase at the event. Continue with the on-site DIY fun with make n’ take projects provided Austin’s newest creative craft-force, The WonderCraft. Show entertainment to be provided by local band Lost Werks and DJ Beef Eigler “Hot Britches” of High Society. Event and fashion show photography by local photographer, John Pesina featured in The Austin American Statesman, Envy Magazine, Tribeza, SXSW World and Austin 360. Austin Handmade is the brainchild of forward thinking local art supporters Jason Butler and Catherine Jones. Butler, a native Texan and graduate from the Art Institute of Dallas also owns and operates Sixgunlover Records and Sonance Rehearsal Studios. His partner Catherine Jones, UT alumni and co-founder of Austin Handmade, helped to establish this business as her way of giving back to a community that has offered her so many possibilities. Austin Handmade began as an online store, marketed toward a national audience. Their idea was to have an inclusive array of arts to represent the diversity of talent in Austin. FREE SHOW!! Fastball w/ opener Black and White Years @ Republic Square Park

Solar Powered Concerts are created to take advantage of Austin spring weather in beautiful outdoor setting and benefit Blue Dog Rescue. Blue Dog Rescue is an Austin area foster organization dedicated to rescuing dogs from our local shelters and adopting them into new homes. Blue Dog Rescue and their four legged friends will be on site for each show.

All music production is solar powered which means artists and audience will experience “pollution free” music. In other words – no stage hum. Solar powered production is not only the better for the environment but also provides a sonically clean sound. Come out and hear for yourself.
