Pixel Pop: A Fusion of Art, Fashion and Music — Friday, July 16th @ The Mohawk

A couple of months ago, From The Mind Of Adi, Electric Promotions, and Team Fabrication decided to put on their thinking caps and come up with a cohesive shindig that combines their biggest passions. Pixel Pop, scheduled to take place on Friday, July 16th at The Mohawk, is the result of those brainstorming sessions. We’re excited to present this original event that brings together the wonderful worlds of art, fashion, and music. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. and cover charge is set at $5 ($7 for minors).
Team Fab’s Jen Rea and Erin Mikulenko are set to present a comic book inspired fashion collection, and local illustrator Chad Townsend will offer up an original art display at the event. Additionally, Jeannine Schafer and other Austin artists will be sketching on site as well. As for the music, outside, Candi and The Strangers and The Happen-Ins will entertain the masses, while later, inside, The Bubbles will bring down the curtain. Plus, DJ sets by uLOVEi throughout the course of the evening so bring those dancing shoes. And naturally, we’d love for you to treasure this evening’s memories forever. We’ve procured the services of not one, but two of our fabulous photog friends. Be sure to stop by both Annie Ray’s and Trevor Ray Thompson’s comic book themed photo-booths for a choice picture, or four.

Portions of the proceeds from the door will benefit HAAM, a local entity that ensures all musicians in town have access to affordable healthcare.

For over thirty years, the Austin Visual Arts Association (AVAA) has supported area artists behind the scenes and behind the canvas by organizing weekly classes to foster artistic talents, arranging discussion panels to encourage conversations about art, and assembling exhibits to give exposure to deserving artists. Tonight, AVAA will host the first ever Austin Visual Arts Awards to recognize the many talented creatives that call Austin home. The awards ceremony will take place at the Austin Museum of Art Downtown beginning at 7pm. Tickets to the awards may be purchased online or at the door for $25.00 - admission includes a cocktail reception and networking event.

Austin Bleet-Up Presents: Austin, Meet Your Bloggers

You are invited - (bloggers and non-bloggers) to the Austin Bleetup at Mohawk on November 5th!  Austin’s very own eavesdropper, Tolly Moseley will be hosting a variety of cool music, fashion & delicious delights for bloggers* and attendees alike. Enjoy bands, pop-up shops by Prototype Vintage and Rene Geneva Designs, drinks by Tito’s Vodka and Sweet Leaf Tea, and eats by Mama Fu’s. (Oh and GET THIS. They are auctioning off a guitar signed by Debbie Harry to benefit Girls Rock Camp.)

In addition to that the oh-so-talented Cory Ryan, will be snapping the night away with a rock’n photo-booth. Expect to get some cool stuff from Birds Barbershop (for the early arrivals that is). The Black and White Years:
During SXSW 2007, Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads discovered this local gem during their showcase. His enthusiasm for the group led to him producing their debut LP, and recruiting Steve Ferrone of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to perform the drum tracks. This led the band to sign with Brando Records which released their first LP in 2007. Since then, the band has performed at festivals such as Austin City Limits Festival, Wireless Festival in Hyde Park, London, and Midem in Cannes, France. In 2009, the band was awarded five music awards during SXSW including Best New Band, Best Song (“Power to Change”), Best Bassist, Best Performing Rock Band, and Best Producer. The song, “Power to Change” has been charted at Waterloo’s Top Ten Songs for numerous weeks and has been on regular rotation on 101X.

L.A.X.:
Emerged from the house party scene, electro group, L.A.X. combines a dance hybrid of house, R&B, and pop. Their invigorating live performance has made them a standout band, being recognized by influential blogs and media outlets. Recently, L.A.X. performed at ACL Festival and is scheduled to perform at this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest with The Black and White Years.

The Bright Light Social Hour:
The Bright Light Social Hour, an Austin indie rock band who recently played at ACL Festival after winning Dell Lounge’s “Sound and the Jury” contest. The band competed with over 1500 bands from around the world in multiple rounds of public and industry voting, culminating in a final battle of the bands at Antone’s Nightclub two nights before the kickoff of ACL. Supported by hundreds of their local fans, the band garnered an unanimous vote from industry judges. Industry judges included reps from Paste Magazine, Spin Magazine, 101X, etc. Tim Basham with Paste Magazine said, “Their Dell Stage performance [at ACL] didn’t disappoint. They are a blast to watch, and I can’t get their songs out of my head.”

Neiliyo:
Neiliyo is a solo electro-funk producer/performer from Austin, TX. His high energy shows with simply an iPhone, a guitar and a charismatic “free-form MC” vocal style has kept him in demand at club shows, house parties, and boat parties around the US since his premiere in July 2008. Neiliyo’s debut LP, “People Skills” and the “Copywriting 101″ mixtape have received huge reviews from Austin’s finest critics, ranging from Partyends.com to Austinist and more. Neiliyo best describes himself as a “Me”J as opposed to a “DJ”, approaching electronic music at a fresh new angle for everybody to shake to.

Fashionistas, mad crafters, music lovers and skateboarders will converge at The Scoot Inn for a completely one-of-a-kind party – the kind where you can design your own t-shirt, take in a band and see a fashion show.We Make Stuff attendees will enjoy music from local rockstars like Hollywood Gossip at 10:30, Lost Werks at 8:30, and Panjoma at 9:30. Watch models strut the runway in a fashion show featuring kicky designs by Tara Tonini, Jinxedaposed Clothing, Malissa Long, accessory designer Dainty Daisy Creations, and talented handbag designer *annemarie*. Models Ruby Joule, Coco Lectric, Goldie Candela, and Pearl Lux of The Jigglewatts, AFAW nominee Haley Penlaber, and fab members of the Lonestar Roller Girls work their walks for these designers, who have been featured everywhere from Austin Fashion Awards to the Modish Blog. Hushed galleries. White walls. “Inside” voices. That’s one way to experience art. But Art Outside 2009 is looking to change that. If you are a visual artist, performer, musician, dancer, comic, filmmaker, crafter, fashion designer, or a creative spirit of any sort - we are looking for you to participate this October 9-11th.

One of Texas’ most anticipated annual art events, Art Outside is a three-day experience for art lovers, families, DIY junkies and avid concert-goers. You’ll perform or display your work in the environs of Apache Pass, located just East of Austin and centered between Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. With over 100+ participants across all media, it’s also an opportunity to meet and network with artists from all over the country, from under-the-radar newcomers to today’s art icons.

Just some of this year’s participants include carnivalian collective Art of Such N’ Such, fresh off their 2009 Bonnaroo performance, eco-chic fashion designer Rene Geneva, recently named Best Local Fashion Designer at the Austin Fashion Awards, blues/vintage rock outfit The Golden Animals, The Mutaytor, Freq Nasty, DIY workshops by The WonderCraft, Comedy by Reggie Watts and Adira Amram, food by Ararat and Happy Vegan Baker and many more. *visit website for full line-up/line-up is subject to change.

Founded at Austin Enchanted Forest, Art Outside began as a small gathering of creative souls, and expanded into a destination event for visitors near and far. We pay homage to the Enchanted Forest as we spread our wings over a new landscape, Apache Pass, where we can host more art than ever before. An inspiring expanse of beautiful central Texas landscape, Apache Pass will offer music performance areas, a cantilevered stage, artist tents, camping grounds for full-weekend participants, food and drink vendors.
